Carpenter Ants in New Hampshire: What’s Actually Happening This Summer

You did the right thing in spring. You saw the large black ants, sprayed the counters, maybe picked up a bait station from the hardware store, and the sightings slowed down. By June, you weren’t seeing much at all. Problem solved, right?

Not quite. What you were watching was a behavioral shift, not a resolution. Carpenter ants in New Hampshire don’t leave when summer arrives. They change how they move, and that change makes an active infestation look like it disappeared. Why Carpenter Ants Seem to Disappear in Summer (But Don’t)

As temperatures rise, carpenter ants shift to primarily nocturnal foraging. Workers that were crossing your kitchen counters at noon in April are now traveling the same routes at 2 a.m. Outdoor food sources become more abundant in summer, so ants concentrate activity outside rather than venturing deep into the home. You stop seeing them indoors. The colony doesn’t stop expanding.

According to UNH Extension’s carpenter ant fact sheet by Dr. Alan T. Eaton and Rachel Maccini, New Hampshire is home to four distinct species within the Camponotus genus. Three are entirely black; one is black with a red-brown midsection. Workers range from one-quarter to one-half inch in length, while queens can reach three-quarters of an inch. If the large black ant you’re finding indoors is anywhere near that size range, there’s no other ant in the NH Seacoast region it’s likely to be. That identification matters, because it tells you you’re dealing with a wood-destroying pest. It’s not a nuisance species that will resolve on its own.

How Carpenter Ant Colonies Actually Work

Carpenter ants operate on a parent-colony-and-satellite system. The parent colony, which houses the queen and the reproductive center of the population, is almost always located outdoors in a stump, a dead tree, a woodpile, or deteriorating structural wood close to the ground. Nests found inside homes are satellite nests: smaller, secondary locations that house workers and developing pupae but no queen. A single colony can extend up to 100 yards and maintain multiple satellite nests simultaneously.

This structure explains why treating only what you can see indoors doesn’t work. You may eliminate workers in the satellite nest, but the parent colony outdoors keeps producing replacements. The indoor population rebuilds within weeks.

Colony maturity is another factor that often surprises homeowners. It can take several years for a carpenter ant colony to grow large enough to produce winged swarmers, the reproductive ants that emerge to start new colonies. If you’ve seen swarmers inside your home between May and August, you’re not dealing with a new problem. You’re looking at evidence of an infestation that’s been developing for years.

Signs of an Active Infestation in & Around Your Home This Summer

Summer actually makes some signs of carpenter ant activity easier to read, not harder, if you know what to look for.

Frass Near Wood Surfaces
Frass is the fine, sawdust-like debris that carpenter ants push out of the galleries they excavate inside wood. It often contains insect fragments and looks slightly coarser than sawdust from a saw. Finding frass signals active excavation, but there’s an important nuance: as UNH Extension notes, frass tells you the nest is nearby, not where it actually is. This is one of the reasons DIY treatments targeting the frass location frequently miss the nesting site entirely.

Foraging Trails Outdoors
In summer, carpenter ants follow defined routes between their parent colony and satellite nests, and between nests and food sources. Watch for ants traveling in a consistent line across your deck, along the foundation, up siding, or between the house and a nearby tree or woodpile. A visible outdoor trail in July is one of the most useful diagnostic signs available. It shows you where the colony is moving and helps trace the connection between the outdoor parent colony and whatever is happening inside the structure.

Carpenter ant swarmers have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and two pairs of wings where the front pair is noticeably larger than the rear. This distinguishes them from termite swarmers, which have a thick waist, straight antennae, and equal-length wings. Finding swarmers near windows or on interior sills between May and August signals a mature, well-established colony.

What DIY Treatments Miss & Why the Problem Returns

Store-bought sprays and bait stations don’t fall short because of poor product quality. They fall short because of what they can’t reach. Surface sprays kill workers on contact but don’t penetrate wall void excavations where satellite nests are located, and they have no effect on the parent colony outdoors. Bait stations rely on workers carrying toxic material back to the nest, but UNH Extension notes that outside of spring, it may be hard to get carpenter ants to consume baits at all, significantly reducing uptake. Pressurized aerosol products aren’t designed to deliver meaningful residual control for carpenter ant infestations.

Beyond product limitations, the most common reason infestations return after DIY treatment is that the moisture source feeding the nesting site was never identified or corrected. Carpenter ants strongly prefer wood that’s been softened by moisture damage. Leaking gutters that saturate fascia boards, inadequate crawl space ventilation that keeps sill plates damp, and direct wood-to-soil contact at deck posts or porch columns all create the conditions carpenter ants seek out for excavating galleries. Treating the ants without addressing the moisture is treating a symptom without touching the cause.

July Is Actually One of the Best Times to Act

Summer gets framed as the off-season for carpenter ant treatment, but that framing gets it backwards. The foraging trails visible in July and August, lines of workers moving from a woodpile to the foundation to a gap under the siding, are exactly what a trained inspector uses to trace the colony back to its source.
